The 1965 NFL
Season featured some of the great competition throughout the season of all
time. The NFL was growing in popularity and was on the verge towards heading to
the playoff format that would lead to a team winning the Super Bowl. Although
this season was pre-Super Bowl era, it definitely had a lot of excitement
throughout the year.
The Western
Conference featured a race that was led by the Green Bay Packers in the start
of the season. The Packers managed to start off the season with a win and
looked as good as they had ever looked. Week after week they continued to find
ways to win ball games until the 4th week, where they would be the only
undefeated team to survive. The Packers continued on fighting strong, managing
to take home victories in the 5th and 6th weeks of the season.
While the
Packers were the only undefeated team, there were other teams that though they
were not undefeated, they would be a threat to the Packers. The Cleveland
Browns were leading the way in the Western Conference. They dropped their week
2 game, but they went on to win 4 in a row to achieve a 5-1 record through 6
games. That week they separated themselves from the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Cardinals
had been fighting neck and neck with the Browns through 5 weeks, sitting at
4-1. Unfortunately the team was not able to win their week 6 game and they
began to fall. This was a fall of epic proportions as they went on to win just
one more game during the rest of the entire season. After starting out 4-1 they
managed to achieve a record of just 5-9.
With the
Packers and the Browns sitting atop the league in week 6 many people began to
dream of a matchup between those two teams. The Baltimore Colts had something
else to say about that.
The Colts
were just a game behind the Packers in the standings and would pull even with
the Packers in week 7. The Colts were on a roll and the Packers would
relinquish their lead to the Colts as they Colts were the top team in the
conference from weeks 8-12.
The Browns
continued their dominance of the Eastern Conference and would easily win their
Conference with a record of 11-3. The next best record in the conference was
7-7.
The Colts
gave up their lead to the Packers in week 13 as they had a streak of 3 straight
weeks without a victory(2 losses and a tie). The Packers just needed a win to
take control of the league in the last week. They were only able to manage a
tie however and the two teams would finish in a tie for the best record in the
league.
The Packers
would win the tiebreaker game and went on to the championship game against the
Browns.
The game
against the Browns was taken by the Packers and they went one to be the NFL
Champions in 1965.
